Life Enhancing Services for Seniors

Needs/Safety Assessment

The first and most important task we perform with our elderly clients is to do a Needs & Safety Assessment. We want to ensure we're aware of all issues that may negatively impact our client, as well as the strengths the seniors possess. We assess the home environment, the senior's physical and functional status, and their social support and emergency preparedness. We also detail what we see as needs to be met. This may include enrollment in the State of Illinois Benefits Program, the provision of additional or healthier food or exercise, or the need for increased socialization. We share our findings with the client, discuss ways in which Hyacinths can help address these needs and obtain her/his authorization and involvement as we proceed with a plan to improve their quality of life. If there is family involved, we also discuss our findings with them.

Home Visiting

Regular visits by home visitors provides much-needed social interaction and companionship. Visitors can identify and address potential hazards in the home that could lead to falls. They can also help with tasks that might pose a fall risk, like moving items on high shelves or navigating stairs. Home visits offer opportunities to monitor seniors' health, reducing the risk of emergency room visits and hospitalizations. By providing the support and assistance seniors need, home visits empower them to stay in their own homes longer. Knowing that a loved one is receiving regular visits and support can provide families with peace of mind and reassurance. Engaging in conversations, activities, or hobbies with a companion can help keep seniors' minds active and sharp, potentially slowing the progression of memory-related issues. Home visits can also foster a sense of security and trust between seniors and their caregivers, building a support system that enhances their emotional well-being and allows them to feel valued and cared for.

Good Morning Phone Calls

Some seniors can go an entire day, perhaps more, without speaking to a single person, either on the phone or in person, especially if they live alone. Receiving a phone call in the morning combats isolation and loneliness by offering a connection to the outside world and providing a consistent point of social interaction, which is crucial for mental health and cognitive function; enhances safety and security by helping establish a sense of routine, reducing anxiety and offering something to look forward to; promotes cognitive stimulation and engagement; supports independence and healthy aging by serving as a gentle reminder for necessary daily activities, helping seniors maintain healthy routines and promoting their ability to live independently for longer; and can spark a "reset" of mood and energy level. That's a lot of benfits for one phone call!

Chore Service

Chore services play a vital role in supporting the independence, safety, and well-being of seniors. Many older adults prefer to age in place, staying in their homes and communities as they get older. However, maintaining a home can become challenging with age. Physical limitations and chronic health conditions can limit physical abilities and energy levels required for household chores. Imagine trying to change light bulbs in hard-to-reach places if you are unable to balance on a ladder, or keeping up the yard when illness drains your energy. Seniors often feel ashamed if their homes are not in tip-top shape, and may avoid having friends in their home, contributing to further isolation and increasing risks to their well-being. Cognitive decline and mental health issues can diminish motivation and energy levels, making it harder to keep up with household tasks, Hyacinths services exist to help seniors with everyday tasks that they can no longer do. We can provide your senior with light housekeeping, seasonal yard work, and minor home repairs.

Errands

Many errands can become challenging for seniors living alone due to mobility issues, limited access to transportation, or physical limitations, and many seniors are reluctant to ask for help, feeling they should be able to cope. The errands Hyacinths volunteers can provide to seniors include light grocery shopping, picking up household supplies, picking up prescriptions, light household tasks, returning library books, dropping off the dry cleaning, some pet care and more. Having someone to regularly perform errands helps seniors maintain independence, ensures access to necessities, reduces physical strain and safety risks, reduces stress and offers peace of mind.

Wish Come True

Wish Come True is a program granting requests for joy and purpose in senior lives. Many seniors, especially those on a limited income, find themselves making difficult choices, having to cut back on hobbies, activities, or even essential supplies in order to cover basic needs. This can lead to feelings of isolation and a decreased quality of life. The Wish Come True Program is designed to address this by providing seniors with requested supplies, activities, and experiences that enrich their lives. Core benefits and objectives include fostering continued engagement and joy; enhancing mental health and wellbeing; promoting independence and dignity; and building community and social connections.

The Happiness Cafe

Over the next year, Hyacinths will work to develop The Happiness Cafe, a place specifically for elderly people, where they can significantly enhance their quality of life just by visiting a welcoming space that offers socialization and engagement. Such a venue interaction, reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation, while offering various activities and learning opportunities that stimulate the mind and foster new friendships. By integrating workshops, book clubs, and art classes, the cafe can empower seniors to explore their interests and maintain an active lifestyle. Ultimately, this initiative promotes a sense of community and belonging, contributing to their overall well-being.

Cost Sharing

Hyacinths understands that raising a family in today's economy is difficult financially. Our organization was not incorporated to make money, but to provide a service that strengthens our community. In order to be able to provide free services to those unable to pay, we will be fundraising to cover administrative expenses. The more successful we are, the more we can use need as the sole determiner of who receives services whether or not they can pay. Fortunately, Will County, Illinois is a very community-minded place to live, which makes us hopeful that we can attract enough volunteers and donors to pay our bills, and perhaps expand at some point. We shall see.

We use income and family size to find the appropriate Will County median income figures for clients. If your family income is 60% or less of the median income, your cost is zero. The median income for a family of four is $89,700. Sixty percent of that is $53,820, so if you make $53,820 or less, you qualify for free services. If your family income is higher than 60% of the median, we use a sliding fee scale, with fees ranging from $5 to $30 an hour. Determining a fee is based on the honor system. We believe what you tell us, and we will never ask to see your financial information. You may request an exception to the guidelines, and we will consider it carefully. The fee scale is a guideline, not a rule. See the fee schedule below.

For Will County, Illinois, the median incomes are:

  • One-person household: $62,800 (60% = $37,680)
